Pet Behavior and Training

DOG TRAINING

Kaua’i Humane Society is proud to offer a variety of positive reinforcement dog training classes, for everything from basic puppy training to advance Canine Good Citizen Certifications. Classes are held on Saturdays at KHS. A schedule is provided below. Class size is limited and often sells out so be sure to register in advance!

 

CLASS OFFERINGS:

**ALL CLASSES ARE FULL**

June 20 – July 11, 2020 – Additional Level 1 class being offered due to COVID-19 closures!

  • Level 1: 9am-10am
    For puppies and/or dogs with no previous training.
  • Level 3: 10:30am-11:30am
    Training for the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certification and/or trick training
  • Level 1: 1pm – 2pm
    For puppies and/or dogs with no previous training.
COST:
  • 5 week class session: $100
  • Registration within one month of adopting from KHS: $75

 

WHAT TO BRING:

Vaccinations are mandatory.
Please bring a copy of your dog’s current vaccination records to the first class, on registration day.  Puppies are required to have received a minimum of 3 DHPP vaccinations. The third vaccination must have been given at least 10 days prior to attending class.

 

Your first class: Please do NOT bring your dog.

This first day, everyone meets at 9:00 AM regardless of the class they intend to take. We will confirm payment, check vaccination records and ask you to tell us about your dog to ensure everyone is enrolled in the right classes.


Classes 2 thru 7:
Let the training begin!

Please be sure to bring the following:

  • Your hungry dog and a supply of treats that he/she loves.
  • A properly fitting collar or harness.
  • A six foot leash.
  • A towel or mat large enough for your dog to lie down on.

 

WHAT NOT TO BRING:
  • No prong, full choke or E-collars.
  • No retractable leashes.
  • No female dogs in heat.
  • No dogs that are known to be aggressive towards people or other dogs.

 

CLASS ETIQUETTE:

Safety is our top priority!

  • Please keep your dog on leash and under your control at all times.
  • Do not allow your dog to approach or greet another dog.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other handlers.
