Aloha for Animals
The Kaua`i Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering respect, responsibility and compassion for all animals and enriching lives by nurturing healthy relationships between pets and people on the island of Kaua`i and beyond.
KHS is a local, independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. KHS has been serving the island of Kaua’i as its only open-intake animal shelter since 1952.
KHS is not associated with any other local or national animal welfare organization. This is why KHS depends on generous contributions from individuals and businesses to continue to fund programs and services that are vital to our island community and the animals we love!

Our Mission
The Kaua`i Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering respect, responsibility and compassion for all animals and enriching lives by nurturing healthy relationships between pets and people on the island of Kaua`i and beyond.
Our Vision
To enrich lives by building a community where animals are treated with compassion and respect, and where every pet has a loving home.
Our History
Since 1952, the Kaua`i Humane Society has been the island’s only open-admission shelter, taking in over 3,500 animals annually. KHS moved to its current Puhi location in 2000 after beginning in Hanapepe for over 50 years.
We Provide Care for All Animals
As the only open-admission shelter on the island of Kaua’i we take in pets regardless of their age, breed, medical condition, or behavioral needs. As the only refuge for homeless pets on Kaua’i, we face unique challenges, often reaching capacity with limited adopters. To address this, we partner with mainland organizations through our transfer and off-island adoption programs.
We Keep Pets and Families Together
Our Community Care Center provides affordable veterinary care to keep pets healthy and costs low. Our Pet Food Bank feeds over 1,300 families annually, addressing pet food insecurity. We also host quarterly mobile pet clinics around the island to take our vet services on wheels to those in need.
When life happens, we offer guidance to help pet owners and their pets stay together during rehoming situations, reducing shelter intakes.
We Don't Euthanize for Time or Space
Our shelter does not euthanize animals for time or space. We only consider humane euthanasia in two situations:
- An animal is terminally ill and in pain or suffering.
- Behavior that is dangerous to public safety.
Euthanasia Policy
Kauai Humane Society strives to find placement for all adoptable animals through adoption or transfer to partner organizations. Animals who are found to be a danger to the public (due to an absence of the state of social well-being demonstrated either by aggression towards people or a history of severe bites on people) are humanely euthanized. In addition, animals that have a low quality of life because of serious medical issues (physical or mental) are humanely euthanized. We are the only open admission shelter on the island and are required to accept all homeless animals regardless of health, age, or disposition.
