Pet Banner Key

Each pet in our care has their own unique story and is looking for the home that’s right for them. To help you learn more, we’ve added banners to their profiles that share important details about their journey and adoption status at a glance.

Every adoption makes a difference! Please keep in mind that adopting any animal, even those not on our “Featured” page, helps all of the animals in our care by giving our staff more time to focus on pets with more complex needs.

At Risk

The “At Risk” banner identifies animals who cannot remain in the shelter due to medical or behavioral needs that exceed our current resources. These pets need to leave the shelter as soon as possible through adoption or foster-to-adopt. Without immediate placement, they may be humanely euthanized.

Needs Extra Help

The “Needs Extra Help” banner identifies animals who need additional support to succeed in a home environment. This may include extra enrichment, training, medical care, or time outside the shelter to decompress. A foster or foster-to-adopt placement can help these pets show their true personalities and improve their chances of adoption.

Long Stay

The “Long Stay” banner identifies pets who have been in KHS care for over 100 days. Through no fault of their own, these animals are often overlooked while waiting for the right home. They are just as deserving of love and a chance to be seen.

In Foster

The “In Foster” banner identifies pets who are currently in a KHS foster home while they wait for adoption. These animals are still available to meet—please contact customerservice@kauaihumane.org to schedule a Meet & Greet.
