Microchips

Why Microchip Your Dog or Cat?

Starting May 26, 2021, all dogs and cats on Kaua`i are required to have a current microchip. Microchips are available at the Kauai Humane Society or your local veterinarian.

A microchip is your pet’s ticket home! A cat or dog that is brought into the shelter or a veterinarian’s office is quickly scanned for a microchip and the owner is contacted immediately. Any pet over 4 weeks of age can get a microchip and current County of Kaua`i legislation requires dogs and cats over 3 months of age to have a microchip.

What is a microchip?

This form of identification is implanted just under the skin of your pet between the shoulders and is about the size of a grain of rice. This is not a GPS tracker and does not function with location monitoring. Your information as the registered owner will be attached to the microchip so that if your pet is found without you, we may be able to reunite you.

How much does it cost?

There is a one-time charge of $20 to microchip your pet.

Do I have to get a new one every year?

No! This is a once in a lifetime process that is completed right here at the shelter. All we ask is that you keep your information current so you can be contacted if you are separated from your pet.

How do I sign up?

You can make an appointment to bring your pet(s) into the shelter to be microchipped by clicking the button below. The whole process should take less than 15 minutes.

What if I don’t give my pet a microchip?

Beginning May 26, 2021, microchipping your pet is required by law. If your pet comes to the shelter we might not be able to reunite you and your pet could be placed for adoption after their 48 hour hold period. There are additional fees charged when you reclaim your pet if we have to microchip your pet while it is in our care.

What if I am separated from my pet and it has a microchip?

Animals that come into KHS with identification are put on a nine day hold in hopes of returning the animal to their family. If your pet comes to the shelter and it has a microchip we  can look up your contact information and reach out to you right away! Animals without ID are only held for 48 hours before they are placed up for adoption.
