WHY TRANSFER ANIMALS TO THE MAINLAND?

The island of Kaua`i has a very limited number of residential homes that accept pets, that means that we often have to look to our no-kill rescue partners on the mainland to help our animals have positive outcomes.

KHS is a no-kill shelter which means we do not euthanize animals due to lack of space. It does mean that we need to get animals out of the shelter and to our rescue partners as often as we can so we don’t overfill the shelter.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

It costs between $250-700 to transfer an animal to the mainland, depending on how big the animal is and where it’s going.

HOW MANY CAN YOU TRANSFER AT ONCE?

Due to airline restrictions, we can only transfer a few animals at once.

In 2021, KHS facilitated it’s first ever mass transfer of 201 animals to the Seattle area. We called it Mission Mainland. These animals either went straight to their adopters on the tarmac, or went straight to our rescue partners.

We’d like to fundraise for another Mission Mainland flight this spring.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Donate to our transfer program! When you donate, write in the memo line “for transfer program” or something along those lines, so we know what the donation is for.
