Free Pet Photos
No one wants to imagine losing their pet, and we all have a tendency to think ‘that won’t happen to me because I take excellent care of my pet.’ But, it can happen to anybody. Dogs dig holes and jump fences and cats are sneaky little creatures.
For the month of March, KHS is focusing on helping the community know what to do if they ever lose their pet and what to do if they ever find an animal. Having a community educated on these topics not only helps to ensure your pet is safe and taken care of, but it helps us reduce the number of animals coming into the shelter and improves the effectiveness of returning animals to their proper owners.
KHS is offering free professional pet photos, microchips, and services to the public on these days:
- Sunday, March 21 – Dogs: noon – 2 p.m. / Cats: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
- Sunday, March 28 – Dogs: noon – 2 p.m. / Cats: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Free Professional Pet Photos
- Make an appointment to have a professional photo taken of your pet for free. This is handy to help people identify your pet in case he or she ever goes missing. This is also handy to use on a missing pet flyer.
- We will email the photo to you.
- Staff and volunteers will input your information and photo into our system. In case your pet is ever lost and we pick up the animal we will be able to promptly identify both the pet and the rightful owner.
Microchips are the best way to be able to find your pet if they are ever lost. A microchip does not work as a tracking device. It is a small device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is easily and quickly inserted between the animal’s shoulder blades using a small needle. Your contact information is registered with the device.
If your pet has a microchip and comes into the shelter, we can easily scan the chip, find your contact information and you will be contacted immediately.
By state law, the animal is held for nine days for the owner to claim the animal, as opposed to two days without a microchip.
Collars and Leashes for Sale
We will be selling low-cost collars and leashes at these events. A collar can also be an excellent way to identify that the pet does indeed belong to a family and isn’t a stray.
Free Break-Away Collar Exchange
If you have a regular cat collar, we will exchange it for a free break-away collar. Any cat that wears a collar should wear a break-away collar. These collars break at the clasp if pressure is applied. This is the safest type of collar for a cat to wear. Cats often creep under tight spaces and get their collars stuck, trapping themselves. Once they panic, they try to stick their arm through the collar, often dislodging the elbow socket and causing serious injury. Each collar is reflective and has a bell for safety.
Costumes for Sale
We will be selling pet costumes! Buy a costume for your pet and we’ll even take their picture in it if you want!
If you have an expired license (in the shape of a bone) buy your required county pet license (now a fire hydrant), good for two years.
