Free Kamaʻaina Field Trips for Shelter Dogs

All summer long, Kauaʻi Humane Society invites Hawai‘i residents to enjoy the outdoors and help a shelter dog get a much-needed break from the kennel. Our Free Kamaʻāina Field Trip Program lets you explore the island while giving a dog the chance to relax, socialize, and show off their true personality — which often helps them get adopted.

How It Works

No appointment needed — simply walk into the shelter between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. daily (except Thursdays).

• Bring your valid Hawai‘i ID

• Our front desk staff will match you with a dog based on your itinerary for the day

• You’ll complete a quick paperwork process and short orientation

• Then, you’re free to head out on your field trip

All dogs must be returned to the shelter by 5:00 p.m. the same day. A $100 late fee will be charged to your card on file if the dog is returned after hours.

Where You Can Go

We’ll help you choose a dog-friendly destination based on the weather and your plans. Popular field trip spots include:

• Moalepe/Kuilau Trail

• Kapaa Coastal Path

• Kalapaki Beach

• Kekaha Beach

• Kukuiolono Golf Course Path

• Sleeping Giant Trail (dry days only)

• Mahaulepu Beach or Secrets Beach (please be cautious of nesting seabirds)

Dogs are welcome on most beaches and trails unless otherwise posted. Please avoid county-maintained beaches and parks. Kapa‘a Beach Path is the only trail where dogs are not allowed.

Guidelines

• Participants must be at least 18 years old

• A liability waiver must be signed

• A credit card number is required for a $100 deposit (only charged if the dog is not returned)

• Dogs must be transported in an enclosed vehicle and securely tethered

• Dogs must remain on leash at all times — no off-leash play or dog-to-dog interactions

• One dog per group unless taking a bonded pair or using two separate vehicles

• Do not apply lotions, oils, or scented products to the dog without staff approval
