Book Tales

Read to shelter cats!
Book Tails provides children the opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of shelter pets while building confidence and improving reading skills.

This is a great opportunity that allows children who are still too young to participate in our regular volunteer program to get involved with the shelter and spend some
time with animals. Children must be accompanied by a parent during this event.

We do have some books available at the shelter, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you’ve got a favorite story you want to share!

Who: Readers aged 7-13 years old

What: Sit and read to our adoptable cats and kittens

Where: The Kauai Humane Society

When: The 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 3:30pm-5:30pm

This event is free, but a donation would be appreciated.

Though some cats and kittens may not appear to be paying attention, they are enjoying your company. Read at your normal voice level so as to not disrupt other readers and remember cats can hear much better than humans, so don’t worry about the cats not hearing you.

Registration closes at 6pm the Thursday before.

Participants are welcome to come anytime during the reading program time, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. We suggest reading for 30 minutes!

To help make our readers feel more comfortable, we ask that parents or guardians sit on the benches outside of the adoption rooms. We will have volunteers in the rooms to help readers if they need.

Parents are welcome to come meet the kitties their child read to once they are done!
