Customer Service Representative


The Kauai Humane Society (KHS) seeks a Customer Service Representative to assist with responding to and assisting the public via telephone, email, and in person on topics including, but not limited to: lost pets, animal care and control services, end of life services for pets, pet adoption and fostering, public spay/neuter and vaccine clinics, etc.  This position is full-time, 40 hours/week, and weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) are required.

Customer Service Representative Qualifications:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent is required.

  • A minimum of 1 year experience working as an administrative assistant, social services or customer counseling position, or client services-related position is required.

  • Experience in de-escalation tactics with upset customers is strongly preferred.

  • Competency to use computers, Google Suite products, and online database programs, (an example being animal shelter software), is required.

  • Animal handling and/or animal welfare industry experience is strongly preferred.

Customer Service Representative Essential Job Functions:

  • Receives and processes stray and relinquished animals.

  • Completes transactional paperwork and computer records for pet adoptions, pet boarding, and other Humane Society processes.

  • Assists in end-of-life services for pets, including intakes and discussion with owners.

  • Conducts animal adoption counseling and showcases animals for adoption.

  • Accepts and processes donations from clients and assists with in-kind donations.

  • Responds to telephone calls and emails from the public, on topics and services including but not limited to:

    • Shelter services such as spay/neuter and vaccine clinics, pet food bank assistance, pet boarding, lost pet reports, pet end-of-life services and counseling, KHS memberships and donations, adoption and foster opportunities.

    • Animal control services; may assign and dispatch calls to Humane Officers.

    • Interpretation and understanding of animal ordinances, field services procedures, and responsible animal ownership.

  • Completes cleaning of public areas daily and ongoing throughout the day

  • Other duties as assigned.

Customer Service Representative Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work with both dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments.

  • Must have a COVID-19 vaccination, unless valid, legal medical exemption documentation is provided.

  • Must be able to deal with an emotionally charged public and carry a fast-paced and changing workload which at times can be stressful.

  • By nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to injured, sick, deceased and/or difficult animals with varying health concerns.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently and daily to perform duties.

  • Must be able to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.

  • Must be able to chase or run after animals that might escape confinement.
