Aloha KHS Family,
As the situation with COVID-19 evolves, KHS is grappling with the challenge of caring for a shelter full of animals while protecting the health of our staff and volunteers. Now, more than ever, people need the comfort of pets, and we want to continue to facilitate adoptions as best we possibly can! We also understand the vital role we play in our community and are committed to providing those services to the best of our ability. We will continue to make updates to our operating procedures as the situation evolves.
Please stay tuned as we will continue to update you as things develop.
Mahalo Nui Loa,
Assistance for Pet Owners in Need
Have you recently lost your job? Are you struggling to feed your pets? We know times are tough and want to do everything we can to keep pets and families together. The Kaua’i Humane Society, in partnership with the County of Kauai, is offering an expanded pet food bank for those in need. Use this link and complete the easy online registration and then sign up for a pick up time starting this Saturday from 11am-2pm and then Tuesdays from 10am-1pm and Thursdays from 1-4pm. You can pick up 2 weeks of food per visit.
KHS remains ready for adoptions! We are accepting online applications for dog and cat adoptions. Adoption counseling, virtual meet & greets, paperwork, and payments will be done from afar. All you will need to do is pick up your new pet in the KHS parking lot. Be sure to check out our website and social media channels for updates on adoptable pets!
If you’ve been wanting to try fostering, now is the time! Help us reduce the number of animals in our care. Post videos and photos of your foster pup or feline to help them get adopted! Be part of our lifesaving team! We are accepting online applications or you can email Alex at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Stray Animal Intakes
We are continuing to take in stray dogs presumed abandoned and will work to reunite them with their owners if they can be found. We ask that you not call us about owned animals who happen to be loose at this time.
While we remain open to take in pets surrendered by their owners, we do ask that you consider waiting until we are through the next few weeks of COVID-19 before surrendering your pet. We can provide limited assistance with food and supplies to help you care for your pet during this time. If you cannot wait, please contact the shelter at 808-632-0610 for an intake appointment.
If you have lost a pet please do not come to the shelter. Email a photo, description of the animal, and last known location to email@example.com. Someone will get back to you as soon as possible. We will be creating a Facebook album of lost pets to share with the community in case someone has found your pet, as well as a Facebook album of stray animals in our care.
The shelter is closed for public spay and neuter services, and our April vaccination clinic is also cancelled.
Euthanasia and Cremations
Euthanasia and cremation services, including ashes pick-up, will be by appointment only. Please call 808-632-0610 to make arrangements.
The Kaua’i Humane Society dog parks are closed until further notice as we comply with the Mayor’s stay at home order. During the COVID-19 crisis, we have cut our staff in half and are focusing only on essential duties such as caring for the animals in our shelter. At this time, we cannot keep the dog parks clean, monitor their use to keep the number of people at the park within acceptable limits or ensure that people opening and closing the gates will observe proper sanitation and precautions. We apologize for the inconvenience, but feel it is in the best interests of the Kaua’i Community to exercise their pets at home during this time.
Field trips are currently suspended.
We are not currently offering any volunteer opportunities. Please feel free to fill out an online volunteer application and we can contact you in the future.
The current session of dog training classes are suspended. An updated schedule will be available soon for future classes. If you have any questions, please email Gayla.
We are limiting our in-kind donations to new bags of food and towels and/or crates that have been cleaned. We ask that towels be bagged prior to bringing them to the shelter. We cannot accept used toys, collars, leashes, dog beds or other items at this time.
BloomingTails Thrift Store
BloomingTails is excited to offer an online store! Shop for treasures while supporting the dogs and cats of KHS! Unfortunately, BloomingTails is currently unable to accept donations.
We Need Your Support More Than Ever! Many of the services which KHS depends on to bring in life-saving revenue — like Direct Release and Field Trips — will be dramatically curtailed for a while. Supporters like you will keep our shelter functioning! Donate now at kauaihumane.org/donate.
