Countless studies have shown the physical, emotional and psychological benefits of spending a lifetime or even an hour with a companion animal.
The Kauai Humane Society is proud to offer two vital programs designed to provide children, seniors and others with loving visits from well-behaved pets and their handlers.
Through our Pets Are Loving Support (PALS) program, we are able to help facilitate the human-animal bond with the help of volunteers and their well-behaved pets who visit hospice patients and senior living facilities. This program also provides limited emergency boarding services for pets owned by people facing domestic violence situations or catastrophic illness or injury.
Another opportunity to volunteer with your pet is our PAWS reading program, designed to help children improve their reading fluency by reading to a friendly dog. By reading out loud to dogs, children are able to boost their reading confidence without judgement – and have fun doing it.
These vital programs are looking for trained dogs and their human companions to volunteer to go to various locations on the island to help elementary school students, and visit with hospice patients, seniors and others.
If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about our PAWS and/or our PALS programs, please contact the Kauai Humane Society at (808) 632-0610, extension 103.
