A.L.O.H.A. (Air Lift Our Homeless Animals)
As an open admission shelter, the Kauai Humane Society receives over 4,000 animals each year. Unfortunately, we do not have enough adoptive homes on Kauai to place all of our incoming adoptable animals, so the A.L.O.H.A. transfer program is vital to finding placement options for Kauai’s homeless pets. In 2017, we transferred 634 animals to other shelter and rescue groups, mostly mainland shelters.
Most shelter-to-shelter pet transfer programs are able to simply drive their pets from the source shelter to the recipient shelter. Since there is approximately 2,500 miles of ocean between Kauai and its nearest mainland shelter partner, air travel is the only feasible way to move animals to recipient shelters, making the transfer process logistically challenging and costly.
How can you help?
The air cargo cost alone per animal averages $150 to fly them to the mainland. This does not include any of the medical care and spay/neuter surgery they receive before traveling. This means that it cost the shelter approximately $67,000 in airfare alone to transfer animals in 2017. In 2018, we hope to expand the transfer program to accommodate the transfer of 900 pets, twice as many as 2017. While we are seeking grants for this program, currently saving more lives by transferring relies solely on donations from our supporters.
